Do you wonder why sex is constantly on your mind? You crave it, got to have it and because of that you end up with different sexual partners or end up watching porn… or the new age porn ‘social media’ to satisfy that longing.
Or do you constantly think about drugs or alcohol? You have to have it. It takes over your mind and you are willing to do what you have to do to get it.
Or do you constantly think about how you are going to get money? You are consumed with schemes or work just to get as much if it in your pocket as possible.
Or is it people and what they have constantly on your mind? You are envious and jealous because you study others to a degree that breeds jealousy and hatred because of what they have or how they look or who they know etc. You’ve created a superficial train of thought to feed envy, jealousy, and hatred.
I could go on and on with different sinful natures, but notice where the battle lies. The battle is in your mind. Your mind is out of alignment with the word of God and those ungodly thought patterns control your behavior.
How did it get this way? Where did you first begin to think like this? What was the entry to this thought pattern? To answer those questions you have to understand the root of the sin.
“When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” James 1:13-15
Believe it or not you have been studied and tested since you were a child. There has been a spiritual force, the enemy, studying and tempting to identify your weaknesses.
Remember the Bible tells us, it’s not flesh and blood that we are fighting against. So it’s not, your body that craves sex to a degree that you can’t control it, or your body that craves drugs to the degree you can’t control it, or even people fueling your hatred. Those are the physical manifestations of what you are fighting spiritually. We are fighting against evil spiritual rulers, and authorities, and powers of darkness.
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:10-13
To make it plain. There are two kingdoms. One is good and God rules there. The other is bad and the devil rules there. God has his set of rules and regulations and have put spiritual laws in place for the good in our lives, to save us eternally.
The devil follows spiritual laws opposing God and does his best to get us to follow with him so that our souls are destroyed eternally. John sums up both kingdoms, and their objectives, in this scripture:
“The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY. I came that they may have LIFE and have it ABUNDANTLY.” John 10:10 (I suggest you read the entire chapter)
In each kingdom there are spiritual forces. These spiritual forces work and play on our minds with suggestions. This is how you have been tested since you were a child. The enemy suggests with thoughts and he also uses people and circumstances to bring suggestions to you. He wants to see what temptation you will give in to, so he can ‘develop’ that weakness into full blown sin. He does this by enticing/tempting you.
Sin is a spiritual force that has a end leading to death (reference James 1:13-15 above). Death can be either a spiritual death (separation from God; sin separates us from God) or a physical death, or both. This is why we are commanded to guard our heart because out of it flows the issues of life. How do you guard your heart? You guard your heart by guarding your ear gates, what you listen to; your eye gates, what you are watching; and your tongue, what you are speaking into the atmosphere. You basically guard yourself from the entry of evil. You do this by identifying sin when it is presented to you.
But with many of us, sin has already entered our lives. What do you do then? The sin has already developed along with its thought processes and behaviors. It has already taken root and has a hold on you. The sin has not only taken root in your mind but also is manifesting in the physical. What do you do then?
This is the battle we fight. The kingdom of good and eternal life, battles the kingdom of destruction and eternal death. The battle is within us.
Now you have identified the sin, the spiritual force that needs to be destroyed, and can now understand the root of the physical manifestations that this sin is causing in your life. You are in a spiritual war that has manifested itself in the earthly realm. You have to destroy the root of the sin. The only way to win a spiritual battle is through your spirit. You can try to fight sin in the flesh, and you just may have some success, because what you starve dies, but it won’t be long lasting, it will only be temporary success because you haven’t destroyed the root. You haven’t destroyed the spiritual force behind the sin.
This is when you call for your spiritual help. You call on the kingdom of God to fight this battle for you. Light drives out darkness. He is light. He has the spiritual forces that fight for you. But you must surrender to Him. You must believe in His plan of salvation for you. He saved us by sending Jesus (Yeshua) to die for our sins. Remember sin leads to death, a spiritual death. And instead of us having to pay the price of death for our sins, even though we are the ones who committed the sins, He purposed Jesus to die in our place. This is why those who believe in Jesus have now shifted from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. We believe that Jesus died for our sins and was raised from the dead and that saves us from having to pay the price of eternal spiritual death. Once we accept Christ into our lives, God doesn’t see sin and eternal death on us, He sees His sons blood and eternal life on us.
Now you are ready to fight the spiritual forces of sin and win. Now you can destroy the spiritual root of the sin. God has given us weapons and His Spirit to help us. But you must be trained to battle. You must know how to use your weapons and you must know when and how to call on your help (your spiritual soldiers). In other words, you need to learn how to fight. You learn this by submitting to God and allowing Him to teach you. Read His Word and allow the Spirit of TRUTH, the Holy Spirit, teach and guide you.
I’m going to put a few scriptures below to help teach you about a few of your weapons. But one of my favorite spiritual ‘fruit’ is self control (spiritual fruit is the actions that you produce when you are living by the Spirit of God). God says that when you have His Spirit you have self control. Self control is powerful. It helps you take the way of escape when temptation arrives. Remember God says with every temptation there is also a way of escape. I have found ‘self control’ helps me take the way of escape when temptation arrives, although sometimes I have to force myself to submit to it.
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13
Make up in your mind to get rid of the sin in your life. Accept Christ and ask him to help you fight. He will. Have faith in His ability. You are not in this battle by yourself. Jesus is with you and ‘your brothers and sisters’ are with you too (these are those who have accepted Christ died for our sins they are your brothers and sisters).
Don’t worry about all the logistics, just do your part and submit to Christ, study His Word and pray. He will guide, and be the strength you need as He takes care of the rest.
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians 6:10-18
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23
“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:31-39
